The Gringo Trail: 10 Things I Wish Every Traveler Knew Before Visiting South America
Every year, thousands of travelers dream about backpacking through South America. They imagine colorful markets, breathtaking mountains, tropical beaches, friendly locals, and unforgettable adventures.
Then they arrive.
And surprisingly, many of them spend most of their trip speaking English, hanging out with other foreigners, and missing some of the most authentic experiences this continent has to offer. That is not necessarily bad, but today I want to give you tips, how to make this an adventure that you never forget instead of a simple trip.
As a Spanish teacher from Ecuador, someone who has traveled extensively through Latin America, and who also lived in Europe for several years, I've had the opportunity to meet hundreds of travelers. I've seen what makes a trip truly memorable—and what often gets in the way.
Today, I want to share 10 things I wish every traveler knew before visiting South America.
1. The Gringo Trail Isn't Bad—But Don't Let It Be Your Entire Trip
The "Gringo Trail" is the unofficial route followed by many backpackers through Latin America. It includes famous destinations like Medellín, Montañita, Cartagena, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Buenos Aires, and many beach towns along the way.
These places are popular for a reason. They're beautiful, accessible, and full of other travelers, there are magical.
But remember: South America is much bigger than its Instagram highlights.
Some of the best experiences happen when you take a detour.
Best tips for you Before Visiting South America
2. Learning Spanish Changes Everything
One of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is waiting until they arrive to start learning Spanish.
You don't need perfect grammar.
You don't need to sound like a native speaker.
You simply need enough Spanish to connect.
A simple conversation at a market, a recommendation from a local, or a spontaneous invitation can completely transform your experience.
That's why I created my Travel Spanish programs: to help travelers learn the Spanish they actually need before they arrive. You can get ready to travel before, from the comfort of your sofa, you only need internet and your computer, or a digital device, the rest, I bring it for you.
Describe what you’re doing: “Estoy caminando a la playa” or “Voy a preparar café.” Of course, to do this one you need to have some previous knowledge, so do not hesitate to contact me for Online spanish lessons.

3. Locals Are Often Waiting for You to Start the Conversation
Many travelers tell me:
"People seem friendly, but I don't know how to approach them." The reality is that most Latin Americans are incredibly welcoming.
Often, the only thing standing between you and a meaningful conversation is a simple:
"Hola, ¿cómo estás?" and a smile, because one smile can open many doors.
A little Spanish goes a long way, but even if you only know a few words, people are going to be happy to make a conversation with you, just try it!
🎓 Teacher Tip:
Talk to local people in spanish or english, doesnt matter how, just try to connect. Latins will be glad to have a short conversation with you!
4. Not All Latin American Countries Are the Same
This is something I always emphasize in my classes.
Many travelers talk about "Latin America" as if it were one culture.
It's not.
Ecuador is different from Colombia.
Peru is different from Argentina.
The food, accents, customs, humor, and even vocabulary vary from country to country, and the best way to know more, is to get deep into the culture, try to remain flexible with your schedule, so, if you like a place, stay there for a bit longer, get to know local people, take some courses, do not go to a tango show, take a tango lesson.
Don´t watch the surfers in Montañita, ask for a surf lesson, get the experience not the photo!
Of course, you can learn spanish while visiting a town, Quito, Lima, Cusco, Montañita are the best locations for you to learn spanish. Learning Spanish helps you appreciate those differences and understand each destination more deeply.
🎓 Teacher Tip:
Stay, if you like a place stay there and get to know the people, be flexible with your reservations, ask advices to native about places to eat, or see as a local.
5. Tourist Areas Don't Always Show the Real Culture
As a local, this is something I notice all the time.
Tourists often visit places recommended by other tourists.
Then the next travelers do exactly the same.
Soon everyone is eating at the same restaurants and taking the same photos.
Meanwhile, the family-owned café, local market, or neighborhood bakery nearby often tells a much richer story. So, aks to the locals for recommendations, walk around, maybe the best restaurant is not the one in yelp, and its just around your corner.
6. Slow Travel Creates Better Memories
Many travelers try to see everything.
They move constantly from city to city.
They spend more time on buses than connecting with people.
But years later, most don't remember every destination.
They remember the conversations.
The friendships.
The unexpected moments.
The best trips are often the slowest ones.
7. Confidence Is More Important Than Perfect Spanish
One of the biggest myths about language learning is that you need to be fluent before traveling.
You don't.
You need confidence.
You need practical phrases.
You need to know how to order food, ask questions, navigate transportation, and start conversations.
That's exactly what we focus on in my online Spanish courses.
8. The Best Experiences Usually Aren't Planned
Some of my favorite memories from traveling—and from hosting travelers in Ecuador—were never part of the itinerary.
A local festival in town
An invitation to dinner, from the staff at the hotel.
A hidden beach, that only local surfers know
A conversation with a stranger, the taxi driver recommending a good restaurant
The more open you are, the more magic you'll find.
9. Ecuador Deserves a Spot on Your South America Itinerary
I might be a little biased, but Ecuador is one of the most underrated countries in South America. Please do not believe all that you hear in the news, all countries in Latin America have political problems, protest, criminality, and news are always portraying the drama of these, better to research with the forums, chats or groups of travelers, in that way you will see that the reality of each country is not the same as you read or hear in the news.
Ecuador, for instance, in a relatively small area, you can experience the Andes, the Amazon, the Pacific Coast, and the Galápagos Islands.
And of course, there is Montañita.
Many travelers know Montañita for surfing and nightlife.
But there is so much more.
A vibrant international community.
Beautiful beaches.
Yoga.
Nature.
Amazing food.
A friendly community
And the perfect environment to immerse yourself in Spanish.
10. The Goal Isn't to See Everything—It's to Connect
When I lived in Europe, I met many people who dreamed of visiting Latin America.
What they were really looking for wasn't just beautiful landscapes.
They wanted connection.
Connection with people.
With culture.
With a different way of life.
And language is the bridge that makes those connections possible.

Because the best souvenirs aren't the things you buy.
They're the conversations, friendships, and stories you bring home.
And those experiences often begin with a simple word:
Hola and a Smile!
