Talking about the past in spanish, how to use the different spanish tenses.
The past tense in spanish, is used to describe actions or events that have already happened.
Sometimes the use of the past tense in spanish can be complicated, since in spanish there are several ways and situations that force the interlocutor to change the tense depending on the frequency, adverbs or repetition of actions and so on. There are two primary past tenses: the preterite and the imperfect.
The preterite tense is used for actions that are completed and have a clear beginning and end. For example, "Ayer, comí pizza" (Yesterday, I ate pizza). It is often used to describe specific events or actions in the past.
The imperfect tense is used for actions that were ongoing or habitual in the past, without a definite beginning or end. It describes what used to happen or sets the scene for another action. For example, "Cuando era niño, jugaba al fútbol" (When I was a child, I used to play soccer). It is also used to describe time, weather, age, and feelings in the past.
Both tenses are essential for accurately conveying past events and experiences in Spanish.
The past imperfect, on the other hand, is used for repetitive actions during an undetermined time.
In English, you would say, “We always used to walk on the beach when we were kids” = Nosotros caminabamos en la playa cuando eramos niños
This sentence explain an action that was done often or several times, as many times that you cannot count them with your hands, and it also does not specify the age of the kids, the time of the day, the season; meaning there is not specific information.
Also, you could compare the Spanish preterite to the English “past progressive”: We were always walking to school.”
How to learn the past tense in Spanish
Although there are several past tenses in Spanish, we usually use 2 more regularly, the past indefinite and the past imperfect. Within a sentence we use the two past tenses, for us it has a logic of use and repetition but we know that for a person who does not speak the native language, this can be very complicated to apply, so here are some tips:
The indefinite preterite is used for very concrete and specific actions, where the keys are:
The exact time: yesterday, last night, this morning, in 1998.
Example:
I was born in 1993
This is an action that cannot be repeated and is very specific in time.
You use the Spanish past tense “Pretérito Imperfecto” to emphasize the process or the habitual repetition of an action or narrate a story.

Hola, mi nombre es Darío Amores. Soy profesor de español. Es algo que me encanta hacer.
Poder enseñar mi idioma a muchas otras personas de todo el mundo. En este videopodcast quiero enseñarte un poco de lo que hago. Quiero que cumplas ese sueño de hablar un nuevo idioma como lo es el español.
Tengo más de 10 años como profesor y me gusta compartir con mis estudiantes, hablar de muchas cosas y más que nada que me enseñes y enseñarte mi vida, todo lo que hacemos aquí. En este podcast hablaré un poquito de lo que es el tiempo pasado. Te voy a explicar de cómo era Montañita hace mucho tiempo atrás.
Hola, yo vivo en Montañita, Ecuador. ¿Conoces? Bueno, el tema es, yo nací en Montañita y ahora déjame explicarte algo sobre este hermoso pueblo. Mucho tiempo atrás Montañita era un pueblo muy pequeño, lleno de gente muy amable y dispuesta a ayudarte en lo que quieras.
La economía principalmente de esta comunidad era la agricultura y la pesca. Especialmente a mí me gustaba mucho acompañar a mis abuelos y a mi padre a las fincas a sembrar, cultivar frutas, vegetales y me gustaba mucho comer de estas variedades de frutas tropicales que sembrábamos. Compartir con los amigos, vecinos y pasar horas ayudando en el campo a mi familia.
También vendíamos sus diferentes productos. Montañita era un pueblito muy pequeño donde había pocos lugares para poder comer, para poder hospedarse hasta que de repente un turista extranjero apareció y pudo descubrir sus magníficas olas para practicar lo que es el deporte, el surf.
Nota gramatical: en este podcast vamos a utilizar mucho el tiempo pasado. Específicamente el pretérito imperfecto ya que nos indica que el imperfecto expresa acciones repetitivas en el pasado. Podemos narrar o describir eventos en el pasado.
Como tal estamos indicando que Montañita era un lugar muy pequeño pero muy bonito. Y poco a poco fue creciendo. Ya enfocados en el turismo empezaron a crecer los restaurantes, los hostales y poco a poco muchos turistas nacionales e internacionales empezaron a visitar este bello pueblito.
El momento que llegó el surf fue algo muy nuevo, muy innovador. Los chicos locales como yo y otros de mis amigos no conocíamos este deporte. Fue algo nuevo.
Al principio fue un poquito difícil llegar a entender todo pero poco a poco pudimos ver que fue una ventana al turismo, una ventana a nuevas oportunidades, a mejorar nuestra economía porque empezaron a crecer los restaurantes, hostales y la economía fue cambiando totalmente de lo que era agricultura y pesca a lo que fue el turismo. El surf para mi es algo muy lindo que después que cuando yo tenía alrededor de 6-7 años empecé a tomar una tabla un poco vieja pero empecé a practicar mucho y poco a poco fue llegando a mi corazón. Después fue algo muy lindo poder tomar una tabla, ir hacia el mar, poderte relajar totalmente, librarte de todo pensamiento, de todo estrés, tomar una ola y poder divertirte.
Para mi el surf no lo veo como algo de competición, lo veo algo que me apasiona y algo que me divierte mucho, algo que en mi hace que fluya totalmente y es una forma de distraerme de la vida, de todo. Ahora podemos ver un poquito la diferencia del pasado y el presente. Podemos ver que antes Montañita era un lugar muy pequeño, ahora es un poco más grande.
Antes no era muy popular el pueblo, ahora es conocido nacional e internacionalmente. Antes habían pocos restaurantes para poder comer, lo mismo para poder hospedarse. Ahora tenemos muchos restaurantes y muchos hoteles y hostales para poder pernoctar.
Montañita ha crecido mucho en la actualidad. En el pasado era un pueblo pequeño, pero siempre recalcando que su gente es muy amable, muy sencilla, dispuesto a ayudarte en lo que sea y dispuesto a enseñarte lo hermoso que es este bello pueblito que está ubicado en Ecuador. Bueno, hasta aquí ha llegado el tema de hoy.

My advise to use the past tense in spanish, when telling a story, think if the actions toke place in one specific moment of time, or if its more like a description of what happened,, then is for sure "imperfecto".
